My Simple System for Stress-Free Meal Planning (Plus a Free Template!)
Does the daily question of “what’s for dinner?” fill you with dread? For years, it did for me. When you’re managing a chronic illness, the energy required to decide on a meal, shop for it, and then cook it can feel like climbing a mountain. Decision fatigue is real, and it often leads to takeout or unhealthy choices simply because it’s easier.Over the last year, I’ve developed a simple, flexible meal planning system that has drastically reduced my stress and helped me eat better, even on low-energy days. It’s not about complicated recipes or hours of meal prep. It’s about being realistic and kind to yourself.Today, I’m sharing that system with you, plus a free Canva template to make it even easier!
Step 1: The “Go-To” Meal Brain Dump
Before you even think about the week ahead, create a master list of your easiest, go-to meals. This is your secret weapon against fatigue. I categorize mine:”Low Spoon” Meals: Things that take less than 15 minutes of active effort (e.g., scrambled eggs, pre-made soup, rotisserie chicken with a bagged salad).30-Minute Meals: Simple, reliable recipes you know by heart.Comfort Meals: The slightly more involved dishes that are worth it on a good day.
Step 2: Check Your Calendar & Your Body
This is the most important step. Look at your week ahead. Do you have a doctor’s appointment on Tuesday? Is Wednesday usually a high-fatigue day? Plan your meals around your anticipated energy levels. Schedule a “Low Spoon” meal for that tough Tuesday. Save the more complex recipe for a day when you know you’ll have more capacity. This is about working with your body, not against it.
Step 3: Use the Template to Fill in the Blanks
Now it’s time to put it all together. Using the simple planner, plug in your meals for the week. As you fill it out, add the ingredients you’ll need to the grocery list section. This keeps everything in one organized place.

Your Free Weekly Meal Planner!
To make this process as easy as possible, I created the exact template I use every week. It’s a simple, clean weekly meal planner with space for every meal and a categorized grocery list. It’s fully editable in Canva, so you can customize it to fit your life.
This simple system has transformed my weeknights from stressful to streamlined. It gives me one less thing to worry about, and that peace of mind is priceless. What’s your biggest meal planning challenge? Let me know in the comments!
