How to Beat the Post-Vacation Crash: A Chronic Illness Travel Recovery Guide
I’m home! While vacation was magical, the exhaustion is real. Coming home from a trip when you have a chronic illness can be just as taxing as the trip itself. It takes conscious effort to manage the post-vacation crash. Here is my personal guide to easing back into routine and prioritizing rest so the magic lasts longer than the fatigue.
Prioritize Unpacking (Selectively)
Don’t try to do it all at once! I am guilty of wanting to come home hurry and unpack so that I can get it over with. This wears me very quickly so I have had to learn to pace myself. Focus only on the essentials: medications, immediate laundry, and clearing out perishable food (if you did not do this before you left). I promise you the rest can wait.
Hydrate and Nourish
Ditch the park food and focus on water and fresh, simple meals. Travel messes with our routines, so getting back to healthier eating is crucial for fighting inflammation.
The “No-Guilt” Rest Rule
Schedule down time. For the first 48 hours, treat rest as an absolute non-negotiable appointment. Listen to your body and don’t push yourself to catch up on everything at once.
Slow Re-Entry to Routine
Ease back into work or home tasks. If you normally work 8 hours, try 4 or 6 the first day back. Small steps prevent a major crash later in the week.
