The Grace Clause: My #1 Productivity Hack for Chronic Illness

If you looked at my planner for yesterday, you’d see a whole lot of… nothing.

Yesterday was a ‘testing day.’ Between appointments and the fatigue that follows medical stress, my ‘Cleaning & Organization Tuesday’ didn’t happen. In the old days, I would have woken up today feeling stressed, trying to cram Tuesday’s tasks into Wednesday’s schedule.

But today is Hump-Day Hack Wednesday, and I’m sharing the core principle of the Low-Energy Lifestyle: The Grace Clause.

What is the Grace Clause?

The Grace Clause is a permanent, standing agreement you have with yourself. It states: If my body or mind requires rest today, I have full permission to move any non-essential task to a later date without guilt.

How to Use It:

  1. Identify the ‘Glass’ vs. ‘Plastic’ Balls: Some tasks are glass (if you drop them, they break—like a medical appointment). Some are plastic (if you drop them, they bounce—like a blog post or folding laundry).
  2. The 48-Hour Slide: If a ‘plastic’ task doesn’t happen, it doesn’t get ‘added’ to tomorrow. It gets moved 48 hours out, or even to next week.
  3. Acknowledge the Win: Yesterday, I ‘won’ by showing up for my health. That was the only ‘glass ball’ that mattered.

Productivity isn’t about doing the most; it’s about managing the energy you actually have. By using the Grace Clause, I’m not ‘behind’ today. I’m exactly where I need to be.
